About Fenja Hinz

I was born in Erlangen, Middle Franconia in Germany. Many may now be wondering - do they even produce wine there? I regret to inform you that This region is better known for its beer consumption. So, there's no romantic tale of how I always knew I wanted to be a winemaker from a young age. However, I believe that's what makes my love for wine and my job even more special. In truth, it was architecture that led me to wine - specifically, a collection of wineries with unique architecture. I started to immerse myself into the topic and study it in greater detail. One key reason for my strong interest, which still holds true today, is that wine is the intersection of many creative processes. It brings together a wide variety of people, yet they all share the same passion.

A LIFE WHERE THE
APPRECIATION OF A
PRODUCT IS PARAMOUNT.
THAT HAS ALWAYS
BEEN MY GOAL.

Fenja Hinz in South Tyrol.

______ I think I have always sought out challenges. Why? Perhaps because it allows one to demonstrate their abilities? I'm not entirely sure... So, after seeing these beautiful wineries in books and magazines, I initially had a rather romanticized idea of what it meant to be a winemaker. This led me to the idea of becoming a winemaker in Tuscany after finishing school. And that first autumn was the "aha" moment for me, and I knew: "That's what I want!" However, I wanted to learn everything from scratch, so I decided to undergo winemaker training and then strengthen my practical experience with technical knowledge in Geisenheim. After a few more stops in the wine world, as you know, I ended up in South Tirol - my next and probably biggest challenge, so far.

FOR
BEAUTY LIES
IN PERCEPTION.

______For me, making wine (and drinking it) is essentially an expression of emotions - it is strongly tied to feelings. The process of how wine is made is fundamentally similar everywhere. However, what really sets wine apart, what makes it individual, special, and unique, are the people who create it and the region that shapes it. ___So, for me, it was about finding my way or rather my place as a winemaker in the South Tirolean wine world. To shape a wine individually. Where and how can I apply what I have learned and at the same time implement my own ideas, develop my own signature?

AND HERE I AM NOW.
MY OWN
LITTLE COSMOS.
MY THOUGHTS.
MY WAY OF
IMPLEMENTING THEM.

Wine is not just wine.

_____ I have always liked the fact that with wine, you can create something physical. Similar to architecture, painting, or dance choreography. You have an idea in your head, and you want to create a certain mood. And then you can bring this idea to life through drawing or, in our wine industry, by working in the vineyard, the winemaking process in the cellar, and packaging.

FOR ME, WINE IS A
CREATIVE MEANS
OF EXPRESSING
MY IDEAS.

When I think of a wine that has impressed me, that has stayed with me for a long time, I naturally also think of the wine's characteristics and character, its origin, its future, but also of the surroundings. The moment and the place where I drank it, or with whom and on what occasion. _____ And that's what Fenja Hinz wines are all about - the love for detail. I believe that consciously perceiving beautiful things makes products special. The same applies to wine.

WINE IS NOT
JUST WINE.

Art for art’s sake.

As a winemaker, my focus is on the vineyard and wine. I think a lot about working with the grape vines and nature because they set the pace. Certainly, I have ideas, a concept. But every year I have to adjust and react to the climatic conditions, which can sometimes be unpredictable. That's what makes the job so exciting.
And in between these tasks, I lose myself and fall in love with so many moments and details that inspire me and bring forth new ideas.
Fenja Hinz Wine aims to create creative space with wines, providing room for other thoughts that arise during winemaking and communicating them. Or, sometimes just sharing something beautiful, a detail, something artistic with you. Because wine is also a piece of art – A creation by nature and the winemaker.

L’ART POUR L’ART.
ART FOR
ART’S SAKE.
